Why We Celebrate International Food Fest at St. Agnes

In a world that is increasingly interconnected, celebrating diversity has become more important than ever. It's not just about tolerance; it's about understanding, appreciating, and embracing the myriad of cultures that make up our global community.

At St. Agnes Academy, we recognize the significance of this cultural tapestry, and one of the ways we showcase it is through our annual International Food Fest, or IFF.

International Food Fest at St. Agnes is an event that requires participation from the entire community. More than 900 students gather in the gym each year for IFF to taste food from regions all over the world. Students and families are asked to donate by providing supplies or contributing homemade food representing their family culture.

While this is one of the most popular events of the year amongst students for obvious reasons, it is much more than just a food fest.

After last year’s IFF, a student said, “This event allows students to learn more about the many different cultures in our community through food. It instills the idea in our Academy women that we should be proud to share our differences with others – it brings us together as a community and strengthens our bonds in sisterhood.”

Let’s dive a little deeper into why IFF is important to St. Agnes.

Catholic social teaching emphasizes the importance of solidarity and the common good. Pope Francis, in his encyclical "Laudato Si'," speaks of the interconnectedness of all people and the need for global solidarity to address the challenges facing humanity, including poverty, inequality, and environmental degradation.

Celebrating different cultures allows us to foster a sense of solidarity with our brothers and sisters around the world. Here’s how this plays out at St. Agnes.

Education is another cornerstone of our Catholic identity. We believe in the pursuit of truth and knowledge, and part of that journey involves learning about the world and its diverse cultures. By exposing students to different cuisines, customs, and traditions, we broaden their horizons and cultivate in them a spirit of curiosity and open-mindedness.

Celebrating International Food Fest also provides an opportunity for cross-cultural exchange and dialogue. It allows students, parents, faculty, and staff from diverse backgrounds to share their experiences and learn from one another.

In doing so, we promote mutual respect and understanding, moving to further break down stereotypes and foster a more inclusive community.

In addition to fostering understanding and unity, International Food Fest Day also serves as a reminder of the blessings we have been given.

As Catholics, we are called to gratitude and stewardship, recognizing that all good gifts ultimately come from God. By tasting and experiencing cuisines from around the world, we acknowledge the richness and diversity of God's creation and express gratitude for the abundance we enjoy.

This year, our International Food Fest will be held on Thursday, April 11. Our students look forward to this special event every year and always come prepared with empty stomachs and adventurous palates.

But the International Food Fest is more than just a culinary event; it's a manifestation of our faith and values. By embracing diversity, fostering understanding, and cultivating gratitude and generosity, we strive to create a community that reflects the universal love of God.
