Are you a Caitlin Clark fan looking to get involved with St. Agnes Academy basketball? We offer three levels of basketball for students looking to up their game. Learn about trying out!
Across the U.S., women’s basketball is experiencing an incredible rise in popularity thanks to standout players like Caitlin Clark, whose record-breaking performances at the collegiate and professional levels have captured the attention of sports fans around the world.

This growing enthusiasm in popular culture has created a new and improved excitement around women’s basketball, and we’ve recently seen an uptick in students interested in shooting their shot as a result.

As part of our Tiger Athletics program, St. Agnes Academy is proud to offer a competitive high school basketball program where students can challenge themselves athletically as well as academically, spiritually, and personally.

We offer three distinct basketball teams for high school students in Houston – Freshman, Junior Varsity, and Varsity – so there’s a place for every aspiring player at St. Agnes.

Let’s review the St. Agnes Academy Basketball options for students interested in joining one of our squads. We’ll also explore how participating in team sports can help young women develop skills and confidence on and off the court.

St. Agnes: Educating Well-Rounded Women for 100+ Years

For more than 100 years, St. Agnes has empowered young women to achieve excellence in academics, leadership, and extracurriculars like athletics. Our early years on Fannin Street laid the foundation for the thriving institution we are today, and our capabilities have only expanded as we have grown.

Thanks to campus improvement projects that enable professional training and education, we are able to offer a wide variety of courses and programs to help young women achieve their highest potential.

Our Tiger Athletics department is no exception when it comes to our ongoing pursuit of excellence. Through generous gifts, our athletics program has benefited from upgraded training facilities and resources, allowing student-athletes to practice and compete at increasingly high levels.

These improvement projects enable professional development opportunities for our athletes by providing community members access to more intensive, specialized coaching, and state-of-the-art equipment designed to help our athletes enhance their performance.

St. Agnes Academy Basketball at a Glance

St. Agnes is committed to fostering a competitive and inclusive environment where all young women can thrive. Whether you are an experienced basketball player or just getting started, there’s a team for you. Here is a brief overview of the teams young women can attend try-outs for:

  • Freshman Team: Ideal for students who are looking to develop and improve their fundamental skills while navigating the transition from middle school to high school.
  • Junior Varsity Team: This squad is for athletes with a strong foundation who are ready to elevate their game and gain more experience before competing at the varsity level.
  • Varsity Team: Our top-level team features a roster of dedicated and skilled players who compete against some of the top private high schools in Houston and throughout the region.

Basketball is a winter sport at St. Agnes, so tryouts are typically held during the fall semester each year. We encourage all students with a passion for basketball to show up for tryouts, even if they have never played on a team in the past.

We believe the best way for students to learn new things is to practice and collaborate with peers of diverse experience levels, which is why we are always happy to see new faces at our athletics tryouts.

The Benefits of Playing Team Sports

Playing sports in high school offers students the opportunity to learn valuable lessons in teamwork, perseverance, and leadership. Not only do these qualities help students become more competitive athletes, but they also make students more well-rounded people better equipped to handle a wide variety of life’s challenges.

Team sports like basketball can be particularly beneficial to a student’s development because they encourage effective communication and cooperation between students of different backgrounds and abilities. Here are a few more research-backed benefits of participating in youth sports:

  • Lower rates of anxiety
  • Increased self-esteem
  • Improved teamwork and social skills
  • Higher levels of academic achievement
  • Enhanced leadership qualities
  • Improved occupational skills

Basketball is an incredibly popular team sport that encourages the development of many positive qualities in young women. Given our culture’s renewed interest in women’s basketball, there’s never been a better time for our Academy women to consider getting involved in this exciting, collaborative sport.

Other Benefits of Joining the Basketball Program

In addition to the interpersonal and health benefits associated with participating in high school athletics, many student-athletes find that playing basketball in high school sets them up for future success in other facets of their lives.

For example, many employers enjoy working with former student-athletes because they know that team sports like basketball encourage skills like collaboration and cooperation that can be vital in today’s professional environments.

For some students, high school athletics participation plays a vital role in their college admissions and scholarship prospects. Many colleges and universities are the beneficiaries of generous gifts that allow high-performing student-athletes to attend reputable institutions on scholarships.

Even students who do not qualify for athletic scholarships can benefit from having played basketball during high school. This is because college admissions counselors, like employers, tend to appreciate students who demonstrate a commitment to extracurricular and community-building activities like high school athletics.

Colleges and universities want to enroll well-rounded students with robust skill sets, and student-athletes often fit the bill for these competitive institutions.
