Do Catholic Schools Grow Catholic Faith?

The research is clear: Catholic school graduates go on to be more active and involved in their spiritual communities. Specifically, studies suggest that people who attend Catholic school are more likely to pray daily, attend church, and donate to religious institutions later in life. St. Agnes Academy graduates are no exception to this trend.

This result is likely due to schools like St. Agnes integrating the catechism of the Catholic Church into every element of daily life – from coursework to extracurricular activities and everything in between.

Let’s examine some of the ways spirituality is embedded in the fabric of our campus life.

Theology in Action

Theology courses are one of the major cornerstones of the St. Agnes academic curriculum. Throughout their four years at St. Agnes Academy, students will have ample opportunities to build their theological foundation through academic instruction about the words of Jesus and his disciples.

Additionally, extracurricular programs and opportunities are designed to support the theological tenets students explore in their coursework. Throughout their academic careers, Academy women will have ample opportunities to put their faith into practice.

St. Agnes students are also required to complete a 100-hour service project prior to graduation that directly ties into the principles they have learned in their theology courses.

Liturgical Worship: The Heart of Spiritual Life

Liturgical worship is central to the campus culture at St. Agnes:
  • Mass is held every Thursday morning, and all students are welcome to attend during Community Time.
  • A priest is available for confession before or after Mass each Thursday.
  • Students are invited to ask questions and learn more about the sacrament of confession in their theology courses
We also celebrate all Holy Days of Obligation, as well as Feasts that celebrate our Catholic, Dominican heritage in school-wide liturgical celebrations. Beyond praying the rosary and attending confession, students are encouraged to take an active role in their spiritual development by engaging with the larger faith community at St. Agnes.
Shared experiences like liturgical celebrations enrich students’ lives and foster a sense of unity and purpose within the academic environment.

Encouraging Student Involvement

St. Agnes offers a variety of opportunities for active student involvement in faith-based activities and organizations on campus, which helps students spend time and grow closer together in meaningful ways.
For example, some students will choose to participate in campus ministry programs, which offer students the chance to serve their peers by leading prayer each morning, serving at Mass, taking part in service projects, and facilitating liturgical celebrations. Students are encouraged to serve as altar servers, lectors, and participants in campus ministry.
A group of students may choose to join the Dominican Preaching Team, a student organization within Campus Ministry, to help facilitate and attend one of our many prayer retreats. These extracurricular offerings provide students with real-world opportunities to share and deepen their faith while building upon the theological foundation instilled in them through their coursework.
